Beat Connection
Beat Connection
Beat Connection exists in the intersection of 21st century art and artifice. Theirs is a sound space less traveled, a convergence of disparate sonic avenues and forward-thinking ideas, a crossbreed of unfettered shine and calculated edge. It is at once pop music in disguise and art music indisposed. It is, in a phrase, music for, about, and in complicit understanding of these modern times.

Comprised of the Seattle-based Reed Juenger, Jarred Katz, Tom Eddy, and Mark Hunter, Beat Connection has evolved from its origin as a duo to the current and complete status as quartet. And as its compositional evolution has emerged, so too has the group's mentality, relying on a laser focus and sharp eye for detail to help shape its big-picture worldview.

"With Beat Connection there is a self-conscious awareness that we are operating within a tenuous pop music realm," says Juenger. "We're almost trying to be the Merry Pranksters of that world, poking pop music in the eye with a stick while also giving it a handshake. Corporate branding and things like that may be necessary, but there's also a huge interest in being subversive to the whole thing."
Led by writer/producer, Nathaniel David Utesch, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Metavari's songwriting is the nostalgic intersection of outmoded electronics, ambient soundscapes and off-kilter pop music. Their live show is a feat of science fiction—a bath of triggered MIDI sequences coupled with vocoder-driven vocals and an arsenal of instruments performed at the touch of their own self-produced software synthesizers. The band builds and commissions their own digital instruments using the sounds of heralded electronics from the 70's, 80's and 90's. When a member of the live show duo isn't performing these synthesizers themselves, they're sending sequences through their instruments like a nineteenth century player piano and triggering an incandescent light show alongside video projections.

Live band includes Nathaniel (synths, vocals, saxophone) and Ty Brinneman (bass, incandescents). Contributing members include Kyle Steury (additional production, studio multi-instrumentalist) and Andrew McComas (studio percussion and multi-instrumentalist). Since 2009, Metavari have toured extensively in the US; sharing the stage with notable acts such as This Will Destroy You, Maserati, Tortoise, Titus Andronicus, Anamanaguchi, The Appleseed Cast, Small Black and Bear in Heaven.

Metavari debuted in 2008 as a five-piece instrumental rock outfit—utilizing programming and synthesizers in the studio, but letting guitars, drums and an electric piano drive the live show. The band released one full-length (Be One of Us and Hear No Noise) and two EPs (Ambling EP and Loosen the Bands) during this period. The group's 2015 release, Moonless, marks Metavari's electronic debut and first release since their departure from the post-rock genre.
